New Spring Looks

Standard

We have a ton of new merch in the store, so we decided to do an impromptu photo shoot with one of our stylists, Taryn (say hi if you see her in one of the stores!)

With so much new pretty stuff to love and wear we thought we would give ya some look inspirations and some fun ways to wear these pieces together. Let us know what you think in the comments section or posting on our facebook page.

High waisted corduroy bellbottoms with our orange and brown lace up heels and floral floppy hat. A light sweater is the perfect top to these funky fresh bottoms.

Super cute coral shorts with an oversized cropped sheer top. Cant forget the hat of course.

Nothing looks quite as glamourous as a long silhouette. Make your legs look miles long in our sheer-flowy pants and lacy button up top.

Cant forget the accessories! This leather messenger bag looks great with a taupe floppy hat and our wedge Sbicca sandals.

5 Ways to Wear an Infinity Scarf

Standard

As winter winds down we start getting out of the cold weather clothes and into some flirty spring wear. Although scarves are traditionally thought of as something you wear to bundle up, we at Blues and Shoes have light-weight, fun spring infinity scarves and a few different ways to wear them!

1. The Double Loop

Blues and Shoes, 5 Ways to Wear an Infinity Scarf

The most basic and easiest way to wear this scarf. Just place over your head (like a necklace) then cross over to form a second loop and put over your head. This way looks best with bigger tops such a bulky cable-knit sweater.

2. The Triple Loop

Blues and Shoes, 5 Ways to Wear an Infinity Scarf

The Triple Loop style is just like the double loop, but surprise, there’s an extra loop. The added weight around the collar area looks really good with plainer, thinner t-shirts, tops, and tank tops. The triple loops add drama and sophistication to an otherwise plain outfit.

3. The Slip Knot

Blues and Shoes, 5 Ways to Wear an Infinity Scarf

The Slip Knot is a very quick way to add a little something extra to an outfit. Hold the scarf at each end, place around neck like you would with a regular scarf but pull one end through the other. This style looks great on thinner shirts or a thick sweater/sweatshirt.

4. The Knot

Blues and Shoes, 5 Ways to Wear an Infinity Scarf

Place the scarf around your neck (like a necklace) and tie a knot at the end. This look is a perfect match for an open blazer. The thinner length of the scarf elongates the body and makes you look taller and leaner by drawing the eye vertically.

3. The Almost Vest

Blues adn Shoes, 5 Ways to Wear an Infinity Scarf

This is a fun and great way to jazz up a turtle neck, long sleeve shirt, or just plain or T-shirt! Place your arm through the scarf like you would a purse strap. Next twist the scarf how ever many times you need to for it to fit. More petite girls will probably twist a few times. Next place your other arm through the other side of the scarf, like a back pack. Adjust so that it is even and comfortable and viola! This look adds a fun, funky dimension to the plain ‘ol T-shirt and jeans.

Our model for this post is the lovely Amanda, one of our talented stylists! Come in, say hi, get dolled up!

We hope you liked our little tutorial! If you found it helpful or have more ways to wear an infinity scarf let us know in the comments!

Spring Skin Care

Standard

We all know the dangers of the sun on our skin, and that we should all wear sunscreen, but what else can we do to give our skin the radiant glow we all crave? Here are a few at home recipes for face scrubs, masks, and treatments that don’t cost an arm and a leg. In fact you probably already have most of these items in your kitchen right now.

Honey-Sugar Scrub

Honey is one of nature’s finest hidden beauty secrets, not only is it a naturally sweet treat it is also a natural antibacterial. Mixed with sugar this sticky goodness makes an incredibly effective yet gentle exfoliant.

Here’s What You Do:

Mix a third cup of honey with a quarter cup of sugar, the coarser the better but regular sugar will work just fine. Work the two ingredients together until mixed. Next gently massage the mixture over the entire surface of your face. Let it sit for 2-3 minutes and rinse. Doing this at least once a week will unclog pores, remove dead skin cells, and give your skin a warm glow.

Oatmeal-Milk-Honey Face Mask

If your having trouble with dry skin than this mask is perfect for you! Milk is great for adding and sealing in moisture, oatmeal soothes skin and works nicely with the milk. Honey helps add glow to your skin as well as fighting bacteria in your pores.

Here’s What You Do:

Cook a half cup of oatmeal in milk. Mix in 2 tablespoons of honey than put the mixture in the fridge for 20-30 minutes, you want it to be cold and sticky so that it will stick to your face. Apply mixture generously over your face and let sit for 15 minutes, then with a wash cloth and warm water gently rinse off. Skin will appear more supple and radiant. If your skin has a tendency to bounce back and forth between overly dry and overly oily than that means that your not getting enough moisture and your skins natural oils are trying to compensate for the drought. If your skin is already naturally oily and dryness is never an issue, then skip the milk and and just stick to the oatmeal and honey.

Egg White Mask for Acne

For some of us acne is our biggest issue. Extreme acne control washes can dry and irritate skin, so why not give your skin a break one night out of the week with something more natural? This super simple little mixture will alleviate red spots and tighten the skin.

Here’s What You Do:

Separate the egg whites from the yolks of 2 large eggs into a bowl. Add a few drops from a lemon wedge (or store bought lemon juice) and whisk until the mixture is frothy. Apply generously to the face, make sure you avoid the area around your eyes as the mask will harden and pull on that delicate skin. Let the mask sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water and a wash cloth, then tone and moisturize as normal.

We hope these recipes give you the glowing skin you deserve! Get your girls together for a night of beauty and try them out! Have any of your own recipes? We want to hear about them! Post them in the comment section and it could be featured in one of our next blogs!

(We are not doctors or dermatologists, these are just recipes we use and have been used by others. Do not use any of these recipes if you have a food allergy to any of the ingredients.)

Blues and Shoes News: 7 Sanity Savers to Keep in Your Purse

Standard

Life is filled with tiny disasters- from leaving your keys in your car to having to wait at the DMV for an extra hour. We’re bringing you seven things to have in your purse at all times-just to be safe.

Spare car key and house key. Accidents happen all the time. Ask everyone you know that drives- locking your keys in your car just happens. But at least this way you can be prepared if it does. Chances are that even if you lock your keys in the car, you’ll still have your purse with you, so keep an extra set of car keys in there.

A Multipurpose tool!  Did you get a splinter from that bench? No one has a bottle opener at the labor day bbq? Need to cut off itchy tag from that new sweater? Multipurpose tools, such as Swiss Army knives, are a godsend when you least expect it.

Pen and paper.  It’s so simple, but most people never carry a pen and paper with them. But how often have you needed it to write down directions, jot out insurance info, take a message for your hubby, etc? Enough said.

Tissues and Cotton swabs.  When it comes to allergies, nose bleeds, crying kids, crying you, make up mix ups, or any other of the elven billion disasters that happen in a day, it’s always good to have something to fix it on hand.

Back up snacks.  There is always a reason to have a couple granola bars in your bag. Flat tire? Well, at least you won’t be hungry AND late. Hungry kids? Avoid that disaster with some goldfish.

Safety pins.  Buttons fall off, zippers break, seams come apart, hems fall down.  Having a spare safety pin in your purse can save you from a wardrobe malfunction when you need it the most!

Lighter or matches. You don’t have to be a smoker for this tip to be helpful. Think about it- how often have you had a loose string? Burn it off instead of pulling it to avoid it getting worse. People also need lighters or matches to light candles, open bottles, starting fires, and light a bbq. Anything can happen, and you never know when you’ll need to make fire.

BLUES AND SHOES NEWS:Dressing Your Body Type

Standard

Feel beautiful in the body you have, instead of looking to change your body to feel beautiful! For the most part, women may gain or lose weight, but your general proportions and body shape stay the same. Even if you’re not your body’s biggest fan, you can learn how to create a look that fits you AND your body. When you dress to match your body type, you can learn to love your body plus you’ll feel confident and comfortable in your own skin!

Step 1: Know Your Shape!

Are you Top-Heavy? If your bust is the heaviest and most dominant feature on your body, you’re top heavy. This means you have large breasts with small hips or a small bottom in comparison.

Are you Hourglass Shaped? Do you have a large bust and hips/bottom with a small waist? Then you have an hourglass figure.

Are you Apple-Shaped? If you have a large bust and tummy with proportionately slender legs, than you are apple-shaped.

Are you Pear-Shaped?  This is when you have a slender bust with large hips or a large bottom.

Are you Petite? This is when you have a slim body with small breasts, hips, and/or bottom.

Step 2: Love Your Shape!

Even famous supermodels and actresses come in all shapes and sizes!

Top Heavy Hollywood Stars

                Queen Latifah

Without a doubt this bodacious beauty is a top heavy actress along with Anne Hathaway and Angelina Jolie!

                Hourglass Hollywood Stars

                Jessica Beil

Undoubtedly this bombshell babe is an hourglass type, along with Scarlett Johansson, Salma Hayek, and Kirsten Dunst.

                Apple-Shaped Hollywood Stars

                Jennifer Hudson

This buxom beauty is an apple shaped star, along with Rosie O’Donnell, Oprah, Lorraine Kelly, and Drew Barrymore.

                Pear –Shaped Hollywood Stars

                Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet along with Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, and Beyonce are all pear-shaped body types!

                Slender Hollywood Stars

                Cameron Diaz

This blonde babe is a slender frame along with Kate Moss, Alexa Chung, and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Step 3: What Works Best and Worst for Your Body?

The Apple body shape

What to Wear:

Empire line and longer length tops will flatter your figure. Go for low-ish necklines to draw the eye upwards.

What You Should Avoid:

Short, boxy jackets and pleated or tiered skirts are not your friends. Cast them out now and feel forever better.

The Pear body shape

What to Wear:

Balance out your curvy bottom half with bold bright tops or tops with large collars, lapels or sleeves.

What You Should Avoid:

Tube, pencil and fishtail skirts, especially tight-fitting ones will only emphasize your hips and behind.

The Top-Heavy body shape

What to Wear:

Fuller skirts and wide leg trousers will balance out your bodyshape beautifully. Don’t be afraid of bright color on your bottom half.

What You Should Avoid:

Shoulder pads and tapering trousers are an absolute no-no! Also steer clear of puffy sleeves, epaulettes and halter tops.

The Hourglass body shape

What to Wear:

Wrap dresses, waist-cinching belts and flared or wide leg jeans will work wonders. Not necessarily all at once though.

What You Should Avoid:

Shapeless baggy sweaters will hide your wonderful waist. Unless you add that magic belt of course!

The Slender body shape

What to Wear:

A structured coat that cinches in with a belt will make you look curvier. If you have a small bust you can get away with tricky to wear high-necked tops.

What You Should Avoid:

Low rise jeans and trousers can make your torso look too long. Stay away from sheath dresses and stick to styles with more shape instead.

Tattle Tale: What Would Your Clothes Say?

Standard

Everyone has heard the saying, “If only walls could talk.” Well, what if your clothes could talk? What would they say about you?

To a certain degree, your clothing already speaks for you. Your style usually broadcasts a basic stereotype of your personality. When you wear tank tops, jeans, and a pair of flip-flops every day, people assume you’re a pretty laid back person. When you parade around in Gucci pumps, pencil skirts, and a nice blouse, people assume you’re a classy business woman. What if your clothes not only told who you are, but where you’ve been and what you’ve done.
Would your favorite Marc Jacobs handbag tell of a crazy night out on the town? Would that old, thrashed pair of Converse speak of a summer of fun when you graduated high school? Tell us your stories and share a picture of the piece of clothing or accessory. We want to hear what your clothes would say! The best stories will be entered and voted upon for a chance to win $15 off a purchase of $50 or more.

Post your stories and picture in a comment. Or upload them to our wall on our fanpage at http://www.facebook.com/thebeatclothing

BLUES AND SHOES NEWS: Summer 2011 Shoe Styles!

Standard

This Summer’s shoes are not the least bit shy. The brighter, taller, funkier the better. The Spring runways were vibrant with shoes in all sorts of colors, designs and heights. We saw new hybrids like the platform wedge with its running shoe sole and the bootie turned sandal with modern cut-outs as well as a whole new shoe altogether; the flatform, flats with the added boost of a platform. Whatever your style and shoe preference, you’re sure to find a trendy Summer shoe!

Platforms are back in a major way this season. Natural materials like wood, raffia, cork and canvas are used to give these shoes texture and contrast against the color blocking trend. Dolce & Gabbana and Donna Karan showed animal prints and safari-themed platforms while Viktor & Rolf impressed with mile-high mint cut-out loafers. Wear this trend with just about anything, they compliment skirts, shorts and pants. With their 70′s attitude they’ll add funky flare to boho style or mix up a modern minimalist outfit.

Cut-outs, lace-ups and and wrap-arounds are making stiletto booties all the rage. Miu Miu, Christian Dior and Camilla Skovgaard paired the bootie with a sky-high stiletto heel in bright colors that are sure to stand out in a crowd. Show off tan legs in these fluorescent shoes worn with a mini or fun Summer dress. Combine them with different prints and patterns, as seen on the Prada runway to complete the Summer trend.

Quite possibly the most influential shoe for Spring and Summer is the platform wedge. They come in every color and style imaginable but the one thing they have in common is their towering height. Flattering for every stature and perfect for warm weather, these wedges are sure to compliment that Summer pedicure. Braided leather, crochet, and woven trellis are all hot trends for Summer. Wear the Jimmy Choo safari wedge with this season’s neutral palette, sport the Fendi color-block platform with flowy 70′s-inspired dresses and rock Prada’s bright running shoe-inspired wedge with an equally bright outfit in stripes.

The Summer shoe trend is all about pairing sharp contrasts- flats with platforms, neutrals with pops of neon, feminine details with tough hardware, a sharp stiletto with a covered boot. Whatever shoe you favor, wear it with confidence!
